Meritocracy

An ironic term to describe those who both exercise power or influence and tend to believe they deserve, or merit, to do so. (See also ‘Meritocratic‘.) Those who tend to be content with society as it is are likely to see it as some kind meritocracy, and the idea is therefore comforting to those who are complacent.
